The weather in Portland is improving and the trees are blooming, which can only mean one thing: Spring has arrived! This is also a popular time of year for neighborhoods and households to hold annual garage sales.

People look to declutter after our long, dark winter, and a garage sale is a simple and easy way to make a bit of extra money while spring cleaning. Whether you relish the tiny house movement or live in a large dwelling, we’ll help you make a garage sale work for your space. Continue reading for our favorite ways to prep your garage for this big day so you can have a successful garage sale.

Before: Planning A Garage Sale

To begin, clean out your garage to make room for tables and large items such as furniture. If you park your cars inside, move them to the street. Organize your garage by storing any loose items on shelves or against the outer walls of your garage.

Map out where you’ll place large items, tables, and what types of items each table will display. Doing this beforehand makes for less stress on the day of the sale.

Day-of: Garage Sale Setup

If your sale spills out onto your driveway, set down some tarps first. Not only is this more visually appealing, but it will keep any items on the ground cleaner. Plus, continuing your sale closer to the sidewalk feels more inviting and welcomes people to stop and browse.

Use your tables to create comfortable aisle ways and make it easy for shoppers to move around. Doing so will also allow you to display your treasures at eye-level for easy browsing. Remember, no one wants to shop at a cluttered or untidy store. People visit garage sales to shop like they would in a retail store.
