How to Reset a Garage Door Opener

Have you lost your garage door remote?

Has your garage door opener stopped responding to your remote?

Is your garage door malfunctioning?

It’s time to reset your garage door opener.

The good news is that resetting or programming your garage door opener is simple. The manufacturer’s guide that came with your opener will include instructions on how to do it. If you’ve lost the manual, search online for the specific brand or model to find the instructions, if you can’t find them, the instructions below should work.

How to Reset a Garage Door Opener

For newer models:

  • Use a ladder to access the garage door opener. On one side you will find a button or an access door.
  • Press and release the button. Depending on the model, the button may be labeled “Learn” or “Program.” An indicator light should illuminate for 30 seconds.
  • Press and hold the button on your remote until the indicator light blinks.
  • Test the remote.

For older models:

  • Locate the DIP switches on your garage door opener. They may be located behind an access panel.
  • Toggle the switches to a new pattern.
  • Open the battery compartment on your remote and set the switched to match the pattern you’ve selected in step 2.
  • Test the remote.

If you have one of these older models, you should consider upgrading to a newer garage door opener that is less susceptible to break-ins.
